The Great Deception

“Aliens,” the Seed of the Serpent & the Coming Delusion
Anchor texts — Luke 21:11, 25–28 · 2 Thessalonians 2:3–12 · Genesis 3:15 (ESV) · Teaching Pastor Frank with Pastor Sabas Jimenez
A note on sources
The framework in this study leans on the work of Dr. Michael S. Heiser, especially The Unseen Realm and Demons (Lexham Press). We want to be plain about one thing from the start. Heiser himself remained cautious about tying modern UAP reports directly to biblical prophecy, and so are we. That spiritual beings exist, that some of them deceive, that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and that false signs and wonders mark the last days: those are doctrines, and Scripture states them plainly. Whether any particular modern report is that activity is application, and application stays humble. Where we cite researchers such as Gary Bates, we present their work as reported findings, not as Scripture and not as proof. We chase no conspiracy theories here. Our authority is the Word of God. Scripture is ESV unless noted.

Introduction · The Day We’ve Been Driving Toward

The Promise Comes Due

For six weeks we have rebuilt a biblical worldview one passage at a time. We have not chased headlines. We did not begin with conspiracy theories or sensational claims. We allowed Scripture to establish its own categories for the unseen realm, and only now, with that foundation under our feet, do we turn to the subject the whole culture is talking about. That order was deliberate. A church that studies the strange only when the news demands it will always be reacting. A church that knows the Word already knows how to think.

A word Jesus used that we usually read past

“There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.”Luke 21:11 (ESV)

The word translated “terrors” is phobētra, and it is related to the word that gives us phobia. It does not describe an emotion. It describes the things that produce the emotion: terrifying sights, dreadful spectacles, fearful appearances. Jesus did not only predict natural disasters in this passage. He warned that humanity would witness sights that produce worldwide fear.

That is why we said on the first night of this series: before the world tells us what to believe, we will let Scripture reveal to us the truth. Whether governments release more information, whether unexplained phenomena increase, whether the headlines grow stranger, the church should already know how to think. We know the Truth, and the Truth sets us free.

Two questions, and only one of them is ours

Our culture is asking one question. The Bible is asking another. The culture asks, “Are we alone?” Governments ask it. Scientists ask it. Social media asks it. The assumption underneath the question is that humanity is waiting to discover intelligent non-human life for the very first time.

Scripture never asks that question. From Genesis to Revelation the Bible simply assumes that intelligent non-human beings already exist: cherubim, seraphim, the sons of God, the heavenly host, principalities, authorities, angels, demons, the divine council. We have spent six weeks meeting them. So the Bible’s question has never been “Do they exist?” Its question has always been, “Who are they, who has been crossing over, and why?”

“Are there UFOs?”

The answer is simple. Yes. And that answer tells you almost nothing.

UFO means unidentified flying object. The government now prefers UAP, unidentified anomalous phenomena. By definition, if someone sees something in the sky they cannot identify, it is a UFO. The word describes the limits of the observer, not the nature of the object. Thousands of such reports are filed every year, many by trained military pilots, commercial airline pilots, radar operators, police officers, and astronomers. Most of them, on investigation, turn out to be ordinary: drones, balloons, aircraft, atmospheric effects, sensor artifacts, classified technology. A remainder does not resolve. Our interest tonight is not in the lights. It is in the category.

Why we are willing to teach this

Many Christians have quietly felt they could never bring these questions into church. It became the elephant in the room. For decades the subject was dismissed, often simply because it was not understood, and the people asking were sent away with a shrug or a raised eyebrow.

Michael Heiser remarked more than once that he had better theological conversations at UFO conferences than he did in many churches. Read that slowly. People outside the church were asking questions about God, human origins, and destiny, and finding more willingness to engage there than here. The tragedy is not that the world asks hard questions. The tragedy is when the church refuses to answer them biblically. Nobody should have to leave the church to receive a serious biblical answer. This should be the safest room in the city to ask a difficult question.

Integrity flag · doctrine and application are not the same thingMichael Heiser himself remained very cautious about connecting modern UAP reports directly to biblical prophecy, and we intend to be equally cautious. Scripture clearly teaches that spiritual beings exist, that some of them deceive, that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and that false signs and wonders will accompany the last days. Those are doctrines. Whether any particular light in the sky or any particular reported encounter is that activity is application, and application must stay humble. We are not claiming that every unexplained sighting is demonic. We are claiming something narrower and far more useful: the Bible already owns the categories required to evaluate a supernatural claim. If some manifestations do represent deceptive spiritual activity, Scripture warned us long ago that they would come.
Big idea
  • Phobētra (Luke 21:11) means the fearful sights themselves, not the feeling of fear.
  • The world asks “Are we alone?” Scripture asks “Who has been crossing over, and why?”
  • “Are there UFOs?” Yes, trivially. The word only describes what an observer could not identify.
  • Doctrine is fixed; application stays humble. Scripture owns the category, and we do not claim more than that.
Movement I · The Oldest Pattern

Crossing Over

The idea that beings from the unseen realm can enter the visible world is not a modern invention forced on the Bible by a curious culture. It is one of the oldest patterns in Scripture, and we have already walked through it week by week without calling it by this name.

The pattern, century by century

From the opening chapters of Genesis, Scripture presents two realms: the visible and the invisible, the earthly and the heavenly. It never presents them as separated by distance. They are presented as overlapping, opened and closed according to God’s sovereign will. Different centuries, same pattern. We introduce nothing new tonight. We only ask what happens when that established doctrine meets today’s headlines.

Four claims, every one of them already proven

We spent six weeks building a foundation precisely so that tonight would not rest on speculation. By now we have established from Scripture that the beings of the unseen realm are:

What Scripture establishes

  • Real. Not symbolic, not imaginary. Scripture treats them as actual beings.
  • Personal. They think, decide, speak, worship, obey, and rebel.
  • Able to manifest. They appeared to Abraham, to Jacob, to Mary, to the women at the tomb.
  • Able to deceive. The serpent deceived Eve; lying spirits empowered false prophets; Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

What we are not claiming

  • That every unexplained sighting is a spiritual being.
  • That any specific reported case has been proven supernatural.
  • That Scripture predicts a particular modern event or date.
  • That we know more than the Word of God tells us.

Ezekiel 1 is not a spacecraft

Let us remove the single most common misconception in this whole discussion. Whenever people claim the Bible describes a UFO, they nearly always point to Ezekiel chapter one: the wheels within wheels, the flashing light, the gleaming metal, the thing that moves and rises. Surely, they say, Ezekiel saw a craft.

Here is the difficulty with that reading. We are not left to guess what Ezekiel saw, because we have what Heiser liked to call the Polaroids of the day. Every single element of that vision is known to us from Babylonian and Near Eastern imagery: the composite four-faced guardian creatures, the wheels, the platform above them, and a throne above the platform with a figure enthroned on it. Ezekiel is not describing transportation. He is describing a throne, and the glory of God seated on it.

Remember where he is standing. He is in Babylon with the exiles, among people who wondered whether Marduk had defeated the God of Israel. The vision answers that fear directly. The God of Israel is enthroned, mobile, and sovereign over history, even here, even now, even in Babylon. Read as a spacecraft, the chapter loses its comfort entirely. Read as a throne, it is one of the most reassuring chapters in the Old Testament.

No ancient text puts the gods on planets

One of the largest assumptions in the modern conversation is that advanced beings must come from another planet. That assumption is worth examining, because neither the Bible nor the wider literature of the ancient Near East ever places the gods on distant worlds. They come from heaven. They come from the divine realm. They descend, they appear, they manifest. They ride chariots and sit on thrones. They are never described as travelers from another solar system.

That distinction matters more than it first appears. Scripture consistently frames reality as two connected realms, the visible and the invisible. Not Earth versus another galaxy. Earth and heaven. Reading extraterrestrials into Genesis 6 or Ezekiel 1 is not drawing meaning out of the text. It is importing a modern idea into it, which is the exact opposite of the discipline we committed to in Week 1.

What a disclosure would and would not reveal

This is no longer hypothetical. In February 2026 the administration directed federal agencies to identify, review, and release government records related to unidentified anomalous phenomena. On May 8, 2026, the first batch was published, 162 files posted publicly through a program called PURSUE, with more released on a rolling basis in the weeks that followed. The government’s own analysts have been consistent that most cases resolve to ordinary explanations and that nothing released constitutes evidence of extraterrestrial technology. A portion remains unresolved.

So suppose the process continues. Suppose one morning something is announced that cannot be explained away. Would that create a brand new category of being? Biblically, no. Scripture has already introduced us to intelligent non-human beings, and it has already told us that some of them deceive. A disclosure would not reveal a new category. It would reveal an ancient category in a new costume.

The names may change. The headlines may change. The technology may change. The strategy has not changed since Eden. And that is why our concern tonight is not lights in the sky. Our concern is truth, because truth is what protects a person from deception.

The turning pointIf these beings can cross over, then the question is no longer whether they can. The real question becomes why. What do they want? Scripture answers that question in the very first prophecy it ever makes, and the answer is not invasion.
Big idea
  • Crossing over is the Bible’s oldest pattern: Eden, Genesis 6, Abraham’s table, Daniel 10.
  • The two realms are not separated by distance. They overlap at God’s will.
  • Ezekiel 1 describes an enthroned God, not a craft. Every element is known throne imagery.
  • No ancient text, biblical or otherwise, places the gods on other planets.
  • A disclosure would reveal an ancient category in a new costume, not a new category.
Movement II · The Strategy

Deception, Not Invasion

If we have learned anything in this series, it is that the enemy is not creative. He is consistent. What is coming is not an invasion. What is coming, and what has always come, is deception.

The method was set in Eden

Notice how the first temptation actually began. The serpent’s opening move was not force. It was a question: “Did God really say?” He did not overpower Eve. He got her to reconsider what God had said. That is the whole strategy, and it has never needed an update. The first deception came through a serpent. A final deception may come through something that looks nothing like a serpent. The message underneath will be identical: question God’s Word, replace God’s truth, offer a better explanation.

The disguise is part of the design

If the enemy wanted to deceive the modern world, would he appear in red with horns? Of course not. That costume announces itself. Paul tells us plainly what to expect instead:

“And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.”2 Corinthians 11:14–15 (ESV)

The Greek behind “disguises himself” is metaschēmatizō. It joins meta, meaning change or transformation, the root behind our word metamorphosis, with schēma, meaning outward form or appearance. Put together it describes a change of outward form that may not reflect what is actually underneath. Deception is not merely something these beings do. Changing appearance is something they are able to do.

Scripture demonstrates the capacity repeatedly. The sons of God of Genesis 6 appeared as men. Messengers at the tomb are described as a young man in white in one Gospel and as two men in dazzling apparel in another. And the risen Christ, in His glorified body, was mistaken for a gardener, entered a room whose doors were locked, and according to Mark appeared to two disciples “in another form.” The capacity itself is not evil. What matters is who is using it, and for what purpose.

Jesus warned the church, not the world

When the disciples asked privately about the sign of His coming and the end of the age, Jesus answered with wars, earthquakes, and famines. But one warning He repeated four separate times in Matthew 24, in verses 4, 5, 11, and 24: do not be led astray.

The Greek word is planaō. In ordinary use it described a traveler who missed the road and wandered off course. It is the root behind our English word planet, because to ancient observers the fixed stars held their pattern while the planets appeared to wander across the sky. The Hebrew side of this idea appears in Genesis 3:13, where Eve says the serpent deceived her, using a word meaning to beguile or lead astray. The picture in both languages is the same: someone is actively pulled off the true path by an outside force.

And notice the audience. Jesus is not warning Rome. He is not warning pagans or skeptics. He says the deception will be refined enough to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. He is warning His church. That is why discernment, knowledge of the Word, and the Holy Spirit in us are not optional equipment for the days ahead.

Teaching pauseThe enemy does not have to eliminate Christianity. He only has to redefine Christ. He does not have to destroy the truth. He only has to replace it with something that looks close enough. That is what deception is.

The delusion is judicial, not random

“The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false.”2 Thessalonians 2:9–11 (ESV)

Paul says that day will not come until the rebellion comes first. The Greek is apostasia: a falling away, a deliberate departure from revealed truth. Then the man of lawlessness is revealed, and he arrives with power and with signs and wonders that are real enough to be convincing and false enough to damn.

This is one of the most misunderstood passages in all of prophecy, so let us be careful with it. God is not deceiving innocent people. Paul tells us exactly why the delusion succeeds, and he puts it in the middle of the sentence: they refused to love the truth. The delusion is not arbitrary. It falls on hearts that have already rejected God’s revelation. People are not deceived because they lack intelligence. They are deceived because truth was offered and declined, and deception was embraced in its place.

The same war, from Genesis to Revelation

The war announced in Genesis 3:15 between the serpent and the seed of the woman has never paused. John, at the other end of the Bible, identifies the same enemy by the same trait:

“And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world.”Revelation 12:9 (ESV)

Not the destroyer of the whole world. The deceiver of the whole world. Same rebellion, same strategy, from the garden to the end.

Why “aliens” would be the perfect costume

If the strategy has always been deception, then we should ask why this particular idea would be so powerful in our generation. The answer is that it offers a counterfeit for each of the central truths of Scripture, one for one.

Deception succeeds because it contains just enough truth to make the lie believable.

The messaging is the tell

When researchers began cataloguing so-called contact experiences, something consistent emerged, and it was not the description of what people saw. Descriptions varied enormously. What stayed remarkably stable was what people were told. Again and again the message reduced Jesus Christ to one of many, questioned the Bible, minimized sin, redirected people to look within themselves rather than to God, and redefined salvation as enlightenment. Jacques Vallée, a respected researcher who was not writing as a Christian, concluded decades ago that there was something deeply deceptive and spiritually harmful running through this messaging. When a secular researcher and a biblical scholar arrive at the same observation from opposite directions, it is worth paying attention.

This reframes the question entirely. The question is not “What did people see?” The question is “What were they told?” And Scripture never instructs us to evaluate a spiritual experience by its appearance. It instructs us to test its message.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”1 John 4:1 (ESV)

Keeping heaven’s furniture and removing God

Perhaps the most effective deception is not removing heaven. It is redefining heaven. Watch how neatly the modern version substitutes:

What Scripture gives

  • God’s throne
  • The heavenly host
  • The divine council
  • The kingdom of God
  • Salvation through the cross

What the counterfeit substitutes

  • A galactic federation
  • Advanced civilizations
  • Cosmic councils
  • An enlightened government from the stars
  • Evolution into higher consciousness

Notice what remains after the substitution. Superior beings. Higher intelligence. Transcendence. A plan for humanity. A destiny. All of heaven’s furniture is still in the room. Only God has been removed, and with Him sin, holiness, judgment, and the cross. You are left with heaven without holiness and destiny without accountability. That is why this counterfeit is persuasive. It does not ask anyone to abandon religion. It simply replaces biblical truth while leaving the shape of it intact.

The vocabulary hijack

Here is the sharpest edge of the strategy. It is not to take your Bible away. It is to keep every word in it and quietly change what the words mean.

“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed… you put up with it readily enough.”2 Corinthians 11:3–4 (ESV)

Read what Paul actually feared. He did not warn that the Corinthians would reject Jesus outright. He warned that they would receive another Jesus, and put up with it readily. And notice how he introduces the danger: by pointing straight back to the serpent and Eve. Same method, new century. Keep the names. Change the meanings. God becomes a transcendent intelligence. Jesus becomes a messenger. Salvation becomes evolution. Every word survives; the gospel does not. Heiser named the goal bluntly: the aim is that we would embrace a different Christ.

Reported findings, not ScriptureResearcher Gary Bates documented encounter phenomena that were deceptive and occult-adjacent in character, and reported that experiences ceased when the name of Jesus was invoked. Heiser, working from his own contacts in that field, independently reported over a hundred documented cases in which invoking the name of Jesus ended repeated experiences permanently. Two researchers, from different corners of the field, reporting the same tell. Heiser also offered a discernment framework worth keeping: he judged that most such cases likely have human causes rather than spiritual ones, while some bear the marks of direct demonic activity. We present all of this as reported findings, not as Scripture and not as proof. What the pattern does suggest is a category, and the category is not extraterrestrial.

You are not approaching this from weakness

“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”Colossians 2:15 (ESV)

You already know these powers, and you already know they have been disarmed. The church does not study its way out of deception. It stands in a victory that was won without our help and cannot be undone by our ignorance. The safest Christian in any room is not the one with the most information about the counterfeit. It is the one who knows Jesus Christ.

Big idea
  • The method was set in Eden: not force, but “Did God really say?”
  • Metaschēmatizō: the enemy changes outward form. The disguise is part of the design.
  • Planaō, used four times in Matthew 24: to be led off the path. Jesus is warning the church.
  • The strong delusion is judicial. It lands on those who refused to love the truth.
  • The counterfeit keeps heaven’s furniture and removes God, sin, and the cross.
  • The endgame is “another Jesus” (2 Corinthians 11:3–4): keep the words, change the meanings.
Movement III · The Landing

The Truth That Cannot Be Deceived

If deception increases, how does anyone stand? Paul already answered, and the answer is not more information about the counterfeit.

Love the truth

Paul told us why people perish in the last days, and it was not because the deception was too powerful to resist. It was “because they refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). Note the verb. Not know the truth. Love it. A person can know a great deal of doctrine and still be moved by whatever is most impressive in the room. Love is what holds when the spectacle arrives.

And this is where the whole series has been heading, because the truth Paul is describing is not finally a set of propositions. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). The Truth is a Person. You cannot deceive someone away from Christ who genuinely knows Him.

There was one crossing over unlike all the others

We have spent this study tracing beings who crossed from the unseen realm into ours. Some came as messengers. Some came in rebellion. But one crossing over stands apart from every other, and it is the center of everything we believe.

“Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”1 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

The same Yahweh who walked in Eden, who sat at Abraham’s table, who filled the temple with glory, is the God who was manifest in the flesh. Not a delegate sent in His place. Not a lesser power beside Him. One God, made visible. Paul says it as directly as language allows: “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Colossians 2:9). The whole fullness. Nothing withheld, nothing divided.

And notice why that matters tonight in particular. The counterfeit never tries to erase Jesus. It shrinks Him. It keeps Him in the conversation as a teacher, a visitor, an enlightened man, because a demoted Jesus is far more useful to a lie than an absent one. The answer to a shrunken Christ is not a better argument. It is Colossians 2:9. He is not a messenger from the transcendent God. He is the transcendent God, made visible, with intrinsic authority over every being that has ever crossed over.

Two descents, and only one of them gives

Compare the two stories side by side and the contrast is total. The counterfeit comes down with power and false signs and wonders, to impress, to deceive, and to redirect worship away from God. It descends in order to take.

The genuine Son of God came down and was born in a manger, lived a life of service, and laid that life down at a cross. He descended in order to give. One comes to be marveled at. One came to be crucified. That is not a small difference in style. It is the difference between a lie and the gospel.

Nothing that could be disclosed can un-God Him

One quiet fear sits underneath this entire subject for many believers: if something were confirmed out there, would our faith survive it? Scripture removes the fear at its root. The image of God is not a quality like intelligence or capability. It is a status, an appointment: humanity was made to represent God and rule on His behalf. That is what Week 1 established. A status conferred by God cannot be revoked by an announcement, and the incarnation cannot be relativized by anything found in the sky. Our faith has never rested on being the only intelligent beings God ever made. We already knew we were not. It rests on the One who became flesh, and no discovery reaches Him.

So we raise our heads

“Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”Luke 21:28 (ESV)

Jesus did not end the Olivet Discourse in fear. He ended it in posture. Straighten up. Raise your heads. This is not a survival plan and it is not a strategy for hiding. It is the bearing of people who recognize the season they are in. The One who told us these things would come is the same One who is coming back, and the enemy knows it. That is precisely why the deception intensifies as the hour gets late.

We do not panic, and we do not bow

In the days ahead our eyes may witness a great deal. We have already seen earthquakes and famines and pestilences and the seas roaring. The heavens may yet show us signs, and people will see them and ask what they mean. Whatever is released in the coming months, whatever claims are made, deception will run high.

But we are not the people who panic, and we are not the people who bow. Our posture is readiness rather than anxiety, and discernment rather than fascination. We test the spirits. We stand on the Word.

And whatever may yet come down out of the sky, the church has already seen something greater. We have seen the God who crossed over, who was seen and handled, who was crucified, who rose, who ascended in glory, and who is coming back. Deception has no lasting power over people who have looked the Truth in the face. His name is Jesus Christ, and this is why the gates of hell will not prevail against His church.

Big idea
  • People perish for refusing to love the truth, not merely for lacking information.
  • The Truth is a Person: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
  • One crossing over stands apart: God manifest in the flesh, the whole fullness of deity bodily.
  • The counterfeit shrinks Christ rather than removing Him. A demoted Jesus is useful to the lie.
  • The image of God is a status, not a quality. Nothing disclosable can un-God the One who became flesh.
  • Luke 21:28 is a posture, not a survival plan. We do not panic, and we do not bow.

Reflection & Discussion

  1. Before this study, would you have felt free to bring a question about this subject to church? What made it feel off limits, and what would it take for our church to be the safest room in the city for hard questions?
  2. We drew a firm line between doctrine (spiritual beings exist and some deceive) and application (whether a given report is that activity). Why does holding that line protect us, and where else in the Christian life does that same discipline matter?
  3. Read Luke 21:11 and 21:28 together. Jesus describes fearful sights and then commands a posture. How do you personally move from the first verse to the second when the headlines are strange?
  4. The pattern of crossing over runs from Eden to Genesis 6 to Abraham’s table to Daniel 10. What difference does it make to your reading of the Bible to see the two realms as overlapping rather than distant?
  5. Ezekiel 1 read as a spacecraft loses all its comfort; read as a throne it becomes one of the most reassuring chapters in the Old Testament. What was Ezekiel’s original audience meant to feel, and where do you need that same assurance?
  6. The serpent’s opening move was a question, not an attack. Where have you noticed “Did God really say?” showing up in your own thinking, in a modern costume?
  7. Paul says the delusion falls on those who “refused to love the truth.” What is the practical difference between knowing the truth and loving it, and how would someone tell which one they have?
  8. Look at the two-column comparison of heaven’s furniture. Which substitutions have you already encountered in conversation, entertainment, or media, without recognizing them at the time?
  9. 2 Corinthians 11:3–4 warns about receiving “another Jesus” while keeping all the same words. How can we tell whether familiar Christian vocabulary is still carrying its biblical meaning?
  10. The counterfeit shrinks Christ rather than removing Him. Why is a demoted Jesus more dangerous to the church than an absent one?
  11. The image of God is a status, not a quality, so nothing that could ever be disclosed can un-God the One who became flesh. What fear does that settle for you?
  12. “We are not the people who panic, and not the people who bow.” What is one specific fear, fascination, or anxiety you can set down this week because of what you now know?
Looking ahead

Week 7 — The End of the Age

We have traced the rebellion from the garden to the present hour. Next week we follow it to its conclusion: the return of the King, the judgment of the gods, the books that are opened, and Eden restored. The story that began with a serpent in a garden does not end in a garden lost. It ends with the King on His throne and His people home.
